Tasty shakes, smoothies, and hot drinks

You’ll use three shakes and two meal replacements daily while on The Simple Diet. Shakes that meet our criteria (100-200 calories, 10-26 grams of protein, and 0-6 grams of fat per serving) are a key part of The Simple Diet. They provide high volume for few calories while also providing protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Shakes come ready-to-serve and in powder form. Be sure to follow package directions for mixing powdered shakes, but here is our basic shake recipe (also found on page 58 of The Simple Diet):

1. Pour about 6 oz of cold water into a blender

2. Add one serving of shake mix and any flavorings. Blend at lowest speed

3. Add four ice cubes, one at a time, making sure to replace the blender cover after each ice cube, and blend briefly

4. Blend on low sped for 1 – 1 ½ minutes until shake is smooth

5. Blend on high speed for another 10 seconds for an extra-creamy shake

You can mix shakes with any fruit or vegetable and diet soda or other non-caloric beverages such as coffee or diet juices. For variety, try adding cinnamon, nutmeg, extracts, artificial sweeteners, sugar-free gelatin, instant coffee, up to 1 tsp. cocoa powder, or up to 1 Tbsp. sugar-free instant pudding mix. The combinations are endless! You’ll find some of our favorite recipes for shakes, floats, smoothies, and flavoring ideas on pages 59-61 and 86-87 of The Simple Diet. Enjoy!

In addition to the unlimited variety of cold shakes, smoothies, coladas, etc., you can make hot drinks.

Hot chocolate: Use 6 oz. of hot water. Add powdered chocolate shake and 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder (I use dark chocolate.) Yummy.

Hot mocha: 6 oz of hot coffee (regular or decaffeinated). Add chocolate shake powder of your choice. Tasty!

I have a question. I noticed that the slim fast shakes don’t meet the protein requirement without skim milk. Yet, when I added the milk my progress slowed. Can I just use the water and not worry about the low protein in the slim fast? I haven’t found another shake yet that I like better than slim fast. If it’s going to be my principle meal, I think I should love the taste. By he way, I’ve lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks.

Hi Nicole, congratulations on your progress. Your shakes are your primary source of protein. You need at least 50 grams of protein per day from your shakes and entrees and bars. If you can get 30 grams from 2 entrees and 20 grams from one protein bar, then you do not need to use the skim milk. Perhaps you could use 1/3 to 1/2 cup of skim milk per shake. I will let you do the arithmetic. Best wishes, Nutdoc
